Image

Description:

The photo depicts a tall wooden pole topped with a cross (leaning to the left) in front of a forest. According to the photo’s owner, it depicts a wooden cross from 1813 on the Bukowa Mountain peak (near the village of Święta Katarzyna) which is a memento of a soldier from the time of Napoleonic wars who was coming back on foot from Moscow and on that spot, a kilometre away from his village Klonów, ended his life. The photo was taken by its owner on 21 December 1941. At that time the cross was cared for by partisans from forests of Świętokrzyskie Province. The inscription at the back of the photo says: “A cross from 1813 on top of Bukowa Góra peak. 21. XII. 41” ; 1941 December 21, Bukowa Mountain (Świętokrzyskie Mountains) ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
